HEMISPHERE BRINGS NEW HOUSING TO HISTORIC DISTRICT

When the Cuyahoga County Metropolitan Housing Authority purchased a former oil depot in Cleveland’s historic Little Italy neighborhood, the discovery of 21 underground storage tanks put an indefinite hold on plans to construct public housing at the site. In the past, as many as 29 such tanks were located at the property, abutting numerous residences in this densely populated area. Before any property development could take place, someone had to address the environmental hazard posed by the abandoned tanks.

Hemisphere Steps In
Hemisphere devised a plan to remove the environmental roadblock and pave the way for much-needed new residential development for the area. Working with the city of Cleveland and Cuyahoga County, Hemisphere devised a cost-effective cleanup strategy integrated with its development plan.

A Residential Renaissance
Now that the environmental concern has been eliminated, Hemisphere is moving forward with plans for residential development on the property. This project is expected to bring new life to this historic neighborhood and help it take better advantage of its location near some of Cleveland’s best-known landmarks, including Case Western Reserve University, the Cleveland Museum of Art, Severance Hall, the University Hospitals medical complex and the Cleveland Clinic Foundation.
